Master Mike Heeney, 6th dan Haedong Kumdo, 5th dan Taekwondo
Master Heeney is a secondary school science and maths teacher at an independent school in QLD. He has been training in the martial arts for 35 years. Master Heeney furthered his training whilst living in South Korea for two years, training Haedong Kumdo under Grandmaster Park Dae-Seop, Master Seo Min-Seok and Master Chung Kyung-Su. Prior to moving to Australia Master Heeney trained Taekwondo under Grandmaster Lee Jung-Nam.
Other arts Master Heeney has trained in include Western Fencing, Capoeira, Aikido, Kobudo and Bongsul. He has trained and taught martial arts both nationally and internationally. Master Heeney has both won and placed highly in many set style and open style martial arts competitions. He has successfully trained numerous gold medal competitors in both Haedong Kumdo and Taekwondo.
Master Heeney believes that the martial arts are first and foremost about developing control of your body in every way. This includes muscle awareness and control, flexibility for ease of movement and fluidity, and mental awareness and self discipline. Training martial arts also has the added benefit of being a great workout for the body as well as developing self defence skills.
Master Lauren Heeney, 4th dan Haedong Kumdo
Master Lauren Heeney is a primary school teacher at an independent school in QLD. In Korea she trained under Grandmaster Park Dae-Seop and Master Seo Min-Seok. Whilst living in South Korea, Master Heeney was a gold medallist at the Haedong Kumdo Championships. She was also the recipient of the Chungam College Award for Technical Ability.
Master Heeney has also trained in Taekwondo and Judo. She believes that training martial arts is an ideal way to develop strength, motivation, perseverance, and self confidence.
Michael Lenarcic, 3rd dan Haedong Kumdo, 1st dan Taekwondo
Michael started training in Haedong Kumdo in 2009 and Taekwondo later on in 2017.
Michael enjoys training in martial arts as a way to exercise, meet people and to have fun with his fellow students. He believes that martial arts are about building focus and discipline of both mind and body, to understand what your capabilities are, and to push past them step by step.
Keith Andrew, 2nd dan Haedong Kumdo, 1st dan Taekwondo
Keith started training in 2012, and his young daughter started training in 2017.
Keith believes the main benefits of training in the martial arts are developing strength, flexibility and mental discipline. He also believes that it sets a good example to his children by continuing to learn new skills. In addition, Keith sees martial arts as a great way to help kids develop self confidence, and training with them is a great way to get some quality one on one time with them.
